American Men Go 10-7 in Opening Round of Australian Open Qualifying; Ten US Women Begin Play Tonight in Melbourne

The first round of the Australian Open men's qualifying is complete, with American men going 10-7 on Wednesday.  Most of the matches were exceedingly close: Stefan Kozlov saved four match points in his 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(3) win over Australian wild card Blake Ellis; Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul also won third set tiebreakers, which are new this year for qualifying at the Australian Open, to reach the second round. After winning the Noumea Challenger last week, Noah Rubin could muster only one game against Mackenzie McDonald, and Michael Mmoh, who had such a great start to the year in Brisbane lost in straight sets to Andrew Whittington of Australia.

The international men with college backgrounds who advanced to the second round are Yannick Hanfmann(USC), JP Smith(Tennessee) and Cameron Norrie(TCU).
